LASIK has helped millions of men and women see clearer using an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. Today’s advanced LASIK versions, like CustomVue LASIK and Bladeless IntraLase LASIK, can treat a higher range of vision aberrations that ever before. Those with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can have their corneas permanently reshaped to the ideal light-bending form for clear vision that can last a lifetime. For many, it is possible to achieve success with LASIK even with extreme degrees of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. However, not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. There are certain vision characteristics that LASIK eye surgeons must use to decide who should have the procedure and who should not.
It is our policy at Advanced Eye & Laser Center of California, Inc., to clear patients for LASIK only if they are in good general health, have healthy corneas, and have no conditions that may raise their risk of complications. You should be at least 18 years of age with a stable prescription for at least a year. Also, eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts may eliminate you from candidacy. We are a conservative laser vision correction center and we will let you know if you are not a good candidate for LASIK.
If Dr. Huynh determines LASIK will not give you the best results, he may recommend an alternative vision correction procedure like PRK or LASEK. If you are interested in having your vision corrected with LASIK, chances are you will be able to have success with the procedure, but we cannot guarantee your results or recommend you for surgery until a thorough eye evaluation and health history is completed. Patients who have had prior vision correction procedures may be able to achieve good results with LASIK, depending on the type of procedure and existing corneal shape.
To be a potential candidate for LASIK you must be at least 18 years old, in good general health, and have good eye health with no diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma. Only an in-depth examination of your eyes, your individual case, your expectations and your lifestyle by an experienced, licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist can determine if you are a candidate.
