Bladeless IntraLase vs. Traditional LASIK
Is Bladeless IntraLase LASIK better than traditional LASIK? LASIK surgeons often disagree on the subject, but the reality is that different patients may have different flap creation needs.
Bladeless IntraLase describes the way the flap is created in the first step of the LASIK process - in the Bladeless version, a corneal flap is created using a targeted laser, and in traditional LASIK, the corneal flap is created using a hand-held instrument called a microkeratome. Some physicians prefer the laser method, claiming that is reduces risk and human error. Others prefer the hand-held cutting method because it allows for more surgeon control. Traditional LASIK with Microkeratome
The eye surgeon uses a hand-held microkeratome, or small blade, to actually cut the top layer of the cornea or epithelium, referred to as the corneal flap. The flap is then hinged and set aside to allow for laser treatment.
- Microkeratome flap creation is less expensive
- Less eye suction is used during hand-held creation
- Risk of flap swelling (edema) may be less with the microkeratome
- Associated with a higher rate of vision disturbances following LASIK
- Blade flap complications are present
Bladeless IntraLase LASIK (All-Laser LASIK)
The eye surgeon directs a state-of-the-art, high energy laser onto the corneal surface and the laser creates the thin corneal flap. The IntraLase Laser uses sophisticated femtosecond technology to create a very precise flap.
