Glaucoma Surgery

Frequently Asked Glaucoma Questions

Am I at risk for developing glaucoma?
There are several conditions and characteristics that can raise your risk for glaucoma. Men and women with diabetes may be more prone to this disease, as well as patients with a family history of glaucoma, patients over age 50, patients with hypertension, and myopic patients. The best way to find out if you are at a higher risk is to schedule a glaucoma screening with our experienced San Diego eye doctor.

Is vision loss due to glaucoma permanent?
Yes, unfortunately vision loss will be permanent. Vision loss occurs when the nerve cells in the eye are destroyed by high intraocular pressure, and the eye's nerve bundles are what coordinate with the brain to carry out the task of vision. There is currently no treatment to restore those optic nerves. That is why it is so important to be tested for glaucoma on a regular basis. The majority of untreated glaucoma patients will first experience blind spots followed by loss of central vision. Early detection is critical in the prevention of vision loss. Schedule a screening.

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
Symptom are the side effects of disease in our bodies designed as a warning system. Glaucoma is such a threatening disease because it has no warning system! Unfortunately, most glaucoma sufferers will experience no symptoms before some degree of vision loss occurs. It is important to choose an ophthalmologist who is experienced in diagnosing and treating glaucoma and skilled at detecting the early signs of the disease.

How often should I have a glaucoma test?
If you experience any problems with your vision, including distortion, glare, halos, etc., you should schedule a comprehensive vision evaluation. Otherwise, we recommend you visit us for a glaucoma test at least once every 2 years. For patients over age 60, an annual glaucoma test is recommended.

Can my glaucoma be treated?
There is no cure for this leading cause of blindness yet. However, if caught in time, glaucoma can be effectively managed and vision loss prevented. Glaucoma treatments include prescription medication, eye drops, laser treatment, and eye surgery to decrease pressure in the eye and stop or prevent nerve damage.
