GLAUCOMA

GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in California and throughout the United States. Characterized by damage to the optic nerve, glaucoma is a serious condition that can have long term vision consequences if ignored.

The optic nerve is the messaging nerve which carries information from the retina to the brain, resulting in vision. When glaucoma occurs, the fluid that provides nourishment to the eye’s cells drains slower than normal, backs up in the eye, and causes dangerous pressure (intraocular pressure). If the pressure is not found and relieved, it can become so great as to injure the tissue and impair vision. Dr. huynh and his California eye care team specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and other vision impairing eye diseases.

Is Your Sight in Danger?

Despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of men and women have lost their sight due to glaucoma, glaucoma awareness is still at a dangerously low level. Many researchers estimate that about half of those suffering from glaucoma have no idea that pressure is building up in their eyes, threatening to steal their precious vision.

Causes of glaucoma can include poor blood-flow to the optic nerve, unusual drainage angle, blocked drainage angle due to poor iris positioning, congenital defects, and complications due to injury or diseases like diabetes.

While symptoms can include eye pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, cloudy vision, blind spots and redness, many cases of glaucoma are symptom-free. That’s why it is essential that adults visit a skilled ophthalmologist a minimum of every two years for eye disease testing including a thorough glaucoma screening. People over age 60 and who have a family history of glaucoma may face an increased risk of developing this condition.
